Cyanotypes at Walnut Garden for the Juneteenth Celebration
June 2023
The workshop at Walnut Garden welcomed a diverse group of visitors during a family-friendly celebration. The location holds special significance for our project: Walnut Garden—a vibrant, centrally located beer garden that attracts both Philadelphia locals and tourists—occupies the space where three buildings burned down during the summer of 2020, the source of our glass fragments.
On a beautiful, sunny day three years later, as part of Walnut Garden’s Juneteenth celebration, we invited attendees to participate in a cyanotype printing activity using the glass shards. Cyanotype printing offers an accessible and engaging way to create images by using sunlight to develop photo-sensitized paper. Participants of all ages received guidance and materials to create unique keepsakes from the glass as part of our cyanotype project.
